Philosophy Statement
When I first began teaching in my field experiences, I was much more of a direct teacher. I would be in complete control of everything that was going on in the class at all times. Now I have realized that students learn best when they have more control of the learning process and that the physical educator better serves as a guide. I like to teach my classes by presenting open challenges that the students must find solutions to. When teaching classes now, I am there for help to either answer questions or cut in and help whenever needed. This is concept is strongly related to the idea of scaffolding. Building on students previously learned skills and assisting them just enough to get the students to meet the goals that I have set for them is the way I choose to teach now.
I try to be as friendly with students as possible when teaching, however, it is important for me to keep the distinction between student and teacher at all times. I believe it is essential to create a nurturing environment where students feel both physically safe and also when they feel they can exchange ideas and ask questions without people judging them. Students need to feel comfortable when coming into the gymnasium regardless of their previously learned skills, race, gender, or anything else that might have the potential of separating them from the group. Since the physical education setting has the potential to develop many social skills, such as, teamwork and interaction, I will make sure to build a bridge between the students and me so that we can communicate effectively with each other. A physical and health education specialist is more than a teacher. Sometimes physical and health education specialists must be friends to the students, role models, nurses, and much more. I intend to be all that I can be for my students and dedicate myself 100% so that I can be the best physical and health education specialist in the world.
My goal as a physical and health education specialist is for all students to be able to live healthy and active lifestyles. To me, this means more than just seeing a group of students a couple of hours a week and playing sports with them. To me, teaching is making students aware of the choices they can make, that will make them healthier, such as, being active and eating right. It is my job to teach students the skills that will enable them to go out and take part in after school activities, exercise, and other healthy activities. It is my responsibility as the physical and health education specialist to inform students about how they can be active outside the school environment and in their personal communities. I believe that all the negative information that we hear about people being less active and not making the right life choices is because they do not know how or where to begin. I believe that being a health and education specialist is my calling. I want to be a teacher so that I can make positive changes in my community. I truly believe that being a teacher in a local elementary school or high school will give me a great opportunity to gain, share, and apply knowledge. If given the opportunity to work in a school, I know that I will be an asset to the faculty because I am devoted and determined.
